How to block WhatsApp on iPhone

Semo is an iPhone app that blocks distracting apps by asking an AI question that quotes your own reason back to you. This page is only about WhatsApp.

How do you block WhatsApp on an iPhone?

It depends on what you mean by a block. Screen Time can limit WhatsApp, and you can ignore that limit if you know the passcode or never set one. Semo asks an AI question that quotes your own reason, and you can dismiss it. The steps on this page are Apple's. Semo is not on the App Store yet. Price shown in the app.

Block WhatsApp with iPhone Screen Time

WhatsApp is the usual example of an app left in Always Allowed, because it is how family messages arrive. While it is on that list, no Downtime and no allowance apply, and Status and Channels stay open too. Status and a family chat are not two apps. On iOS 26, WhatsApp is under Social. On iOS 27 it is Social Media.

iOS 26

  1. Look at Always Allowed before you build a WhatsApp limit Settings, Screen Time, Always Allowed. If WhatsApp is listed, remove it or stop here. A limit you add while it is exempt will look broken.
  2. Add WhatsApp alone, and expect chats to pause too App Limits, Add Limit, Social, WhatsApp only. When the time is gone, family messages wait. There is no Status-only tick box.
  3. Mute Status in notifications if chats must stay If you cannot delay chats, do not use the App Limit. Use Settings, Notifications, WhatsApp, and mute the alerts that are Status or Channels. That is a different tool.

iOS 27

  1. WhatsApp shares Social Media Time Allowances: WhatsApp draws from Social Media with the other apps in that category. Always Allowed still bypasses the allowance entirely.
  2. Channels are not a second allowance iOS 27 does not see WhatsApp Channels as another app. They stop when WhatsApp stops.

Apple's steps: App Limits on iOS 26 and Time Allowances on iOS 27. A limit you set for yourself can be ignored if you know the Screen Time passcode, or if you never set one.

What WhatsApp's own limits do, and why they fail

WhatsApp does not have a daily timer that closes Status and leaves chats. It has notification settings, mute on a chat, and archive. Status disappears after a day on its own schedule. That is not a limit on how long you watch it. Channels can notify you all day. Muting those notifications is the in-app lever. It does nothing once the app is already open.

An example reason

Written for this page. Not a quote from a user.

I open WhatsApp for a family message, and Status is why I am still in the app.

How Semo helps with WhatsApp

Store that if it is your pattern. Semo blocks WhatsApp, when you have chosen it, by asking an AI question that quotes the reason. If missing a message is not acceptable, do not select WhatsApp, and mute Status instead. Semo cannot mute Status for you. No results are published.

Questions

Why did my WhatsApp limit do nothing during Downtime?

Check Always Allowed. WhatsApp is often added there on purpose. Exempt apps ignore Downtime and App Limits.

Can I block Status and not chats?

Not with Screen Time. Mute Status notifications, or accept that a limit pauses the whole app, including family chats.

Does WhatsApp Web count?

WhatsApp Web in Safari is the browser, not the WhatsApp App Limit, on iOS 26. See the Safari guide.
