How to block Instagram on iPhone
Semo is an iPhone app that blocks distracting apps by asking an AI question that quotes your own reason back to you. This page is only about Instagram.
How do you block Instagram on an iPhone?
It depends on what you mean by a block. Screen Time can limit Instagram, and you can ignore that limit if you know the passcode or never set one. Semo asks an AI question that quotes your own reason, and you can dismiss it. The steps on this page are Apple's. Semo is not on the App Store yet. Price shown in the app.
Block Instagram with iPhone Screen Time
Instagram is one icon that contains Reels, DMs, Stories and the feed. A system limit cannot pause Reels and leave DMs open. Threads is a different icon, so an Instagram limit does not cover it. On iOS 26 the category in App Limits is Social. On iOS 27 it is Social Media, shared with other apps in that allowance.
iOS 26
- Turn counting on before the Instagram limit In Settings, open Screen Time and make sure App and Website Activity is enabled. An Instagram App Limit does not record time while that switch is off.
- Select Instagram inside Social Go to App Limits, Add Limit, open Social, and select Instagram only. Leaving the whole category ticked will also limit other apps you may still need for messages.
- Decide what "open" means for DMs After you set the daily time, look at Always Allowed. If Instagram is there because you use it for messages, the Reels feed is allowed as well. iOS does not split those.
iOS 27
- Set a Social Media allowance with Instagram in mind Settings, Screen Time, Time Allowances. The daily total and the Social Media category both apply. Instagram draws from that category along with other social apps until you change the mix under Manage Categories.
- Do not expect the Instagram limit to cover Threads Threads is its own app. After you set the allowance, check Threads separately. instagram.com in Safari is a different door on iOS 26; on iOS 27, only a site the developer has linked is counted with the app.
Apple's steps: App Limits on iOS 26 and Time Allowances on iOS 27. A limit you set for yourself can be ignored if you know the Screen Time passcode, or if you never set one.
What Instagram's own limits do, and why they fail
Instagram has a daily time reminder under Your activity (the menu has also been labelled Time spent). When the time is reached it shows a notice you can dismiss and keep scrolling. Quiet mode and notification muting reduce pings. They do not stop the app opening. Close Friends, Notes and the hidden likes count are not time limits. The reminder also cannot tell a reply to one person from a Reels session, because both happen inside Instagram.
An example reason
Written for this page. Not a quote from a user.
I tell myself I am checking whether a friend replied, and I am still on Reels twenty minutes later.
How Semo helps with Instagram
That sentence is a useful reason to store. A rule you can write is "a reply to a person is the point, Reels are not". Semo blocks Instagram by asking an AI question that quotes the reason you stored. It cannot see the difference between a DM and a Reel on its own. The question is there so you say which one you opened it for. No result of that question has been published.
Questions
Will limiting Instagram also limit Threads or Messenger?
No. Threads and Messenger are separate apps. Set a limit on each icon you actually want to cap. A limit on Instagram does include Reels, Stories, DMs and the feed, because those are not separate apps.
I dismissed Instagram's daily limit. Is that a bug?
The in-app reminder is built to be dismissed. It is not the same control as Screen Time. Screen Time can still be ignored if you know the Screen Time passcode, or if you never set one.
What should I do about instagram.com in the browser?
On iOS 26, Safari is outside an Instagram App Limit. Use the Safari guide on this site if the website is how you get around the icon. On iOS 27, check whether Time Allowances already include Instagram's linked site.
